How can I avoid holiday stress as a retiree?

As we try our best to try to not rush into another holiday season, I think it’s safe to say that we’re going to rush into another holiday season. Of course, we should know better, and we all hear about taking time to enjoy our family and friends and to be thankful for what’s important in our lives, but we know that we have parties to attend and gifts to buy and baked goods to bake.

The holiday season is all about spending time with family and friends, enjoying great food, and creating memories. Although it can be joyous for most of us, many of our senior friends and family find the holiday season confusing, hectic, and even depressing based on their health conditions.

Here are some tips for seniors to have a great holiday:

  1. Eat Healthy. Yes, treats are permitted if they are not the norm. Be sure to limit sweets, carbs, and alcohol no matter how great the temptation. Drink plenty of water.
  2. Keep exercising. This will help burn the extra calories as well as relieve stress and tension.
  3. Take breaks. Over committing and running yourself ragged trying to please everyone will only exhaust you and put you in a bad mood. Try to pace yourself.
  4. Don’t forget medications. With the fast pace of the holidays, it’s easy to forget to take or even refill medications. This can be dangerous! Create reminders to stay on task with this.

At Danbury Senior Living, our mission is to help create the best possible Holiday Season for those that live with us and their families as we focus on living our best lives. Call today to learn more!
