If you’re like most Americans, you tend to get a little cranky around the holidays especially as you get older! Many times, this less than cheery attitude is a result of loss, missing the “good old days,” and/or not having anything to do around the holidays.
My encouragement to you is to “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” This is very important around the holidays. Here are some tips on making your holidays as merry as they can be.
- Stop focusing on what you don’t have and be grateful for what you do. As my grandfather always said: “There’s someone in your world who looks up to you, is jealous of you, and wishes they had it as good as you. Are you living up to that expectation?”
- Recreate childhood memories. Work with young people to build the train set, make Christmas cookies, and go Christmas Caroling just like you did long ago. It will change your mood for the better!
- Be clear with others about the help you need. If you need a ride to church services or help wrapping presents, don’t be shy about asking someone for help. You’ll be surprised at how others are filled with Holiday Cheer and are happy to assist!
