What can a pet do for a senior?

What can a pet do for a senior?

Actually, the question should be “What CAN’T a pet do for a senior?” Pets and interacting with pets are incredibly important as we age. For seniors, the benefits of a furry companion can be life-changing or even life-saving! Here are a few of the many benefits:

  1. Walking a dog is great cardiovascular exercise.
  2. The simple act of caring for a pet (petting, brushing, feeding) provides both mild activity and a means to stay engaged.
  3. Pets can make the elderly feel needed and that feeling can translate into a greater sense of purpose and self-worth.
  4. During what can be a lonely time of life, the unconditional love of a cherished dog or cat can be a bridge to more socialization with others, lowered stress, mental stimulation, and a renewed interest in life.

We should note that it’s not just owning a pet that has benefits but visiting with different pets is also valuable! We also welcome furry friends of all shapes and sizes to visit our Danbury residents.
